AKRON, Ohio - Akron Public Schools (APS) is now in partnership between Ellet Community Learning Center (CLC) and the City of Akron. The partnership is part of the large community of businesses engaging with the College & Career Academies of Akron. The City of Akron will offer instructional support and real-world learning opportunities in areas of criminal justice, fire safety, and animal studies. The academy will be named the City of Akron Academy of Community Health and Safety.
“This partnership underscores the long standing relationship between Akron Public Schools and the City of Akron,” said Superintendent Christine Fowler Mack. “The strength of our city and opportunities within will guide our students to develop the professional and academic skills to be successful in Akron and in life.”
"We are proud to partner with Akron Public Schools to give our students this opportunity to learn real-world skills and prepare for careers they can pursue right here in their own community," said Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. "We are especially proud to play a leading role in developing the next generation of our public safety forces. Providing our children with the skills and education necessary to succeed in the workforce is essential to Akron's future and we look forward to seeing students thrive in the City of Akron Academy of Community Health and Safety."
The collaboration between Akron Public Schools and the City of Akron was formed with the help of United Way of Summit & Medina. United Way serves as a link between the College and Career Academies of Akron and local businesses to provide hands-on learning opportunities for students and to strengthen the education to employment pipeline in Summit County.
“The City of Akron has, time and time again, has shown it is fully committed to improving the lives of its residents,” said Jim Mullen, president and CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina. “The City understands that the health of our community depends on educating our future workforce, and we are grateful to partner with them in our work with the College & Career Academies of Akron to make that a reality.”
APS was designated a Ford Next Generation Learning Community in May 2017. Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, is supporting the transformation of public high schools into career-themed academies to better prepare students for college and professional success in today's competitive global economy. College and Career Academies of Akron are supported by the following key strategic partners: GAR Foundation, United Way of Summit & Medina, ConxusNEO, Summit Education Initiative, and Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce.
