On Saturday, April 30, the cadets of Akron Public Schools (APS) came together to celebrate the first annual JROTC Day. APS is one of a handful of school districts to host all four JROTC branches. On this day, Army (Kenmore-Garfield High School), Marine (East CLC), Navy (Ellet CLC) and Air Force (Buchtel CLC) cadets were honored for choosing a rigorous elective designed to challenge them to become better leaders. This occasion also provided the opportunity to thank the Akron community for the support it has provided to the JROTC cadets throughout the years.

Proclamations for JROTC Day were issued by Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and a representative sent by Akron Mayor Daniel Horrigan. Cadets competed in the cadet challenge, showcasing excellence in academics, air rifle, physical fitness and precision drill. At the end of the day, Rachel Tecca, assistant superintendent, presented the Superintendent's Cup to East CLC for being the top APS JROTC unit. When asked what they remembered most about the day, cadets said they felt a sense of camaraderie, teamwork and belonging.
