A group of three students donated
400 cans to the Ellet High School
canned food drive competition last
month.
One of the three students, Blake
Miller, was mostly responsible
for the
grand donation. “I wanted to stand out
from the rest and give back,” said
Miller. According to Miller, money was
no issue: “It’s a lot of money but I’ll
recover. It’s not all about the money to
me; it’s about all the families I helped
and you can’t put a price on that,” he
said.
Miller hopes that the donation will
bring more kindness into the world,
saying, “I don’t feel that what I did was
winning, I just did what was right. My
grandma told me when I was younger
that karma is a real thing so hopefully
it comes in a good way. Hopefully the
families I helped will be able to pay it
forward to someone else.”
The donation made up about 34% of
the Applied Engineering total and
around 17% of the school-wide total,
according to student council’s records.
The Applied Engineering academy won
the competition, beating the runner-
up Community Health and Safety
academy by 682 cans.

The annual school competition sees
each academy, Community Health and
Safety, Global Marketing and Media,
Applied Engineering, and the
Freshman Academy
battle it out in an
effort to donate the most canned food
to the Good Neighbors Food Center.
According to their website, Good
Neighbors is a nonprofit charitable
organization that accepts donations of
food, clothing, items for babies,
personal care items, cleaning supplies,
blankets, and books and distributes
them to families in need. The
organization consists of only one part-
time paid employee and over 300
volunteers across their six locations in
Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Ellet, Green,
and Tallmadge. According to the
student council, the organization
serves more than 30,000 families each
year.

Many teachers this year offered
extra credit for food donations, and
students who donated at least 10
items received a ticket to a movie
shown in the auditorium on December
10.
